Nelson was born in Brampton, Ontario in 1932 and attended the University of Toronto where he met the former Jean Guild of Brockville, Ontario, his wife of almost 55 years. As a biologist, he studied and taught at a number of universities namely: Wayne State in Michigan, Queen’s in Kingston, Ontario, and McGill, Montreal, Quebec. Later, he worked as a researcher in Burlington, Ontario.
Moving to Dartmouth in 1983, Nelson and Jean became very active in the community and shared their love of nature through involvement in the local and provincial gardening communities. They were both dedicated members of St. James United Church and active supporters of the church’s food bank. Nelson served on a number of different stewardship committees. He loved a good book and was an active member of the St. James United Church Book Club for many years.
Nelson will be sadly missed by his children, Anne, (Dartmouth), Catherine, (Toronto), James (Marilyn) and grandchildren Stephen and Mercedes, and great-granddaughter Sara, all of Ohio. He is survived by sister, Mildred (Acton, Ontario), and nieces and nephews in Ontario.
The family would like to thank the staff at Dartmouth General Hospital for their care. They would ask that instead of flowers, please make donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a local food bank. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 3rd from 2-4 & 7-9pm in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home. Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 4th at 11am in St. James United Church. Online condolences may be viewed or sent to: www.mattatallfuneralhome.com
