Norman was the sixth boy of eight siblings; Gerry, Francis, Tommy, Allen, Theresa, and Carol. Most of his childhood was spent on the military bases of Shannon Park and Wallace Heights. This fostered a great enthusiasm, shared with his father, Ted, for military documentaries and airplane models.
Other interests varied greatly. Medical science, astronomy, geology, hockey, and music he shared with his daughter Laurie Anna. His greatest love by far was for cooking, and this talent was enjoyed by all. Neighbours everywhere were forever returning empty dishes that had served up hot meals and desserts of every kind.
Norm's employment history varied greatly, with his favourite hours put in at the VG and IWK hospitals. Most of his vacation time was spent at his home in Pictou County with many happy hours with in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
On a regular weekend, if Norm wasn't cheering on the Montreal Canadiens, he could be found with a book of some kind, dog eared on a favorite topic. Not surprisingly (after 23 years of marriage and a daughter to his credit) he eventually returned to school at NSCC for upgrading and earned a Dean's Award for his efforts.
Gradually over the next 10 years, Norm's health issues became greater until a family history of cardiac issues came to dominate and ultimately steal him from us.
As we age, it never gets any easier to lose someone who was such a large part of our lives. The hurt will eventually lessen but Norm's place in our hearts will never disappear.
Donation's in Norm's memory may be made to your local food bank.
