Ollie was born and raised in Eastern Passage and was the daughter of the late William and Catherine Vardy. She helped with the family grocery store for many years. Ollie joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1951 as Leading Airwoman and one of the first female officers in communications. She married the love of her life, Jack, in 1953 and raised her three children as a stay at home mother. She was a faithful member of St. Peter’s Anglican church and served as a choir member, a Sunday School teacher, a Junior Auxiliary leader, a member of the hospital visitation committee and also collected for Penny-A-Meal. She was a member of a bowling league and enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune, Coronation Street, doing crossword puzzles and reading. Ollie was the definition of love. She exuded kindness, was a great listener, had a smile that would brighten a room and a special twinkle in her eyes. She was a devoted family woman and treasured spending time with those she loved. She was like a nurse and second mom to many. Her lifelong home on Howard Ave. (formerly Arlington Heights), ‘the hill’ was a family gathering spot where people always felt welcomed.
A devoted mother, Ollie leaves behind a legacy of love and values and is survived by her daughter, Debbie (Bruce) Kennedy, son John (Sherry) Dauphinee, and son-in-law Bill Matthews. She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren; Jill (Steve), Jared (Kim), Josh (Leah), Lee (Christina), and Brad (Sara). She will continue to be felt through the laughter and warmth of her great grandchildren; Kara, Colin, Addison, Blake, Jonah, Chloe, Max, London, Alexis, Destiny, and Dylan. She will be remembered always by her loving sister Bernice Lemire, brother-in-law Aubrey (Juliette) and many special nieces and nephews, cousins and friends, especially Jean Matthews and Doris Morris.
Ollie was predeceased by her parents, husband Vincent “Jack”, daughter Paula, brother William, sisters; Helen and Thelma, great granddaughter Elizabeth and many in-laws, family and friends.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of 5 West at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building where Ollie resided for the last year and a half. They showed her true compassion and exceptional care throughout her time there and especially in the final moments of her life.
A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Eastern Passage on Thursday January 11th, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow. Burial will be held in the spring. Family flowers only. In memory of Ollie, donations can be made to St. Peter’s Anglican church or a charity of your choice.
Ollie lived a long, full life and saying goodbye is never easy. When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure and she will live in all of our hearts forever.
We love you, a bushel and a peck.
