

The family of Robert John Bell II sadly announces his passing in his cherished hometown of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia at the age of 88.
Born in 1937 to the late Robert John and Irene May (Weldon) Bell and lived primarily in Dartmouth and for a few years in Oakland, California. A lifelong learner and adventurer, he attended Rothesay Collegiate School, Queen’s University, UNB, and TUNS Engineering.
Robert started working for the family business at the Belmont Hotel where he met the love of his life, Helen Blanche Dalrymple. Together, they embarked on a journey to raise their family, that took them to Prince George, BC, where Robert worked in a pulp and paper mill. They returned to Dartmouth so he could join his brother Bill, in the family business, Bell Enterprises Ltd., and later worked with Innovative Properties.
Robert’s first priority was always family. He was also deeply committed to his community. Robert gave generously of his time and talents. He was actively involved in Kiwanis for 55 years, the DGH Foundation for 30+ years, the YMCA Healthy Heart, Family Business Atlantic (CAFE), IPOANS, Dartmouth Lakes Advisory Board, UDI.
He quietly supported many Dartmouth community projects including DGH—5th floor and an X-Ray Suite, St James United Church. Robert was a fixture on the Kiwanis tree lot every Christmas and spread the joy of Kiwanis maple syrup every spring.
Robert treasured his friendships, especially those formed through the British Car enthusiasts and Kiwanis and was known for his sharp memory and generosity.
He is survived by his children Jennifer Bell-Harding (Stephen Harding), Lenora Bell (Douglas Curren), Robert Bell III (Lorena Thorburn), and Heather Bell (Marc-André Lavoie); grandchildren Benjamin (Laura), Bradford, and Breanna Curren; Andrew (Sydni) and Cameron Harding; Isaac and Simon Bell; and Chloé Lavoie; great-grandchildren Finley and Henry Curren; sister-in-law Beatrice Demont, many nieces and nephews; and cousins Alice-Jean, Graham and Sharon. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Helen, grandson Angel, brother William, and sister Alison.
Robert was grateful for the compassionate care he received at Dartmouth General Hospital.
Visitation at Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street on Friday, October 17 from 7-9 pm. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 18th at 11 am at St. James United Church 181 Portland St. with Rev. Catherine MacDonald officiating.
