Born April 1, 1956, in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Brian lived a life marked by service, loyalty, and deep love for his family. Predeceased by his father, Bruce, he is held in loving memory by his mother, Elizabeth; his loving wife of 15 years, Colleen; his brothers Stephen (Cindy) and David (Madeleine); Maureen, the mother of his girls; and a wide circle of extended family.
A proud Dad and Grandad, Brian leaves behind his beloved daughters Barbara (Bernie), Veronica (Mike), and Laura (James), along with his four cherished grandchildren - Michael, Olivia, Alexander and Sydney - each of whom brought him immeasurable joy.
Brian served with distinction in the Royal Canadian Navy for 33 years, rising through roles that demanded skill, steadiness, and leadership. From Navigator to Operations Officer, and later as Officer in Charge of Incident Response during Hurricane Juan, Brian’s dedication never wavered. He retired in 2010 as the Queen’s Harbour Master, closing a career defined by honour.
In early 2007, while posted to HMCS Queen Charlotte in Prince Edward Island, Brian met Colleen, who would become his devoted partner in life. Married in 2011, they shared a love of travel, new recipes, and quiet evenings together. Colleen was Brian’s steadfast support, offering unwavering care throughout his final days.
Outside of his career and family, Brian found joy in simple pleasures. He was an avid reader, often found with a book in hand, and three more in a pile ready to go. He also loved playing cribbage, a game he approached with both strategy and humour, never missing a chance to celebrate a good hand or tease a loved one over a close match.
Brian’s happiest place was the family camp in Sheet Harbour, where he built famously oversized bonfires, roasted marshmallows, and spent time fishing with those he loved most. His presence, humour, and warmth will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A sincere thank you to the staff of Dartmouth General Hospital, especially Cassie, Emma and Taylor, who provided care and comfort to both Brian and his family in his final days.
A Celebration of Life will take place on November 19, 2026 at 11:00 AM, with a reception to follow, at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, located at 217 Portland Street in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
