Susan Marie MacDonald

2 May , 19577 April , 2019

61, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully at home on April 7, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Mrs. Elsie Chisholm of Pictou. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Greg; her daughters, Rebecca (Bradley) MacDonald Bourgaize, Quebec and Suzanne MacDonald, Halifax and granddaughter, Laura Bourgaize - the apple of her eye. She is also survived by her sister, Annette (Donald) Ferguson, Dartmouth and nieces, Michelle and Paula; uncle, Eric LeBlanc of Pictou; niece, Erica also of Pictou; brother-in-law, Gordon; sister-in-law, Marian and constant companion Molly. Besides her mother, she was predeceased by her brother Michael and aunt Marie LeBlanc.

Susan was a graduate of Pictou Academy and the Nova Scotia Community College. She was a devoted mother and provided a true home for her family where everyone was welcome, whether for lunch, dinner or a late night snack. After her children were grown, Susan began a second career in retail. She excelled at every opportunity, providing first class service. It was easy for her because she treated everyone with kindness and respect - the way she wanted to be treated. She had a great sense of humour, enjoyed music, reading, pictures, cooking and most of all Christmas. Diabetes did take a toll on her quality of life lately and kept her from doing many of the things she enjoyed.

She had a very special place in her heart for Laura. The daily conversation on facetime or the phone always ended with “I love you and I miss you” and truer words were never spoken.

Cremation has taken place and the family will receive visitors at the A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth on Friday, April 12, 2019 from 7 - 9 P.M. A Funeral Mass will be held for Susan on Saturday, April 13 from Stella Maris Parish, Denoon St., Pictou, NS at 2:30 P.M. with burial at Stella Maris Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements in Pictou are entrusted to McLaren’s Funeral Home.

The family would like to thank the many healthcare professionals that provided Susan with wonderful care over the past few years. Donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association in Susan’s memory would be appreciated.

“… So close your eyes; You can close your eyes, it's all right; I don't know no love songs; And I can't sing the blues anymore; But I can sing this song; And you can sing this song; When I'm gone…” James Taylor.

Dear Greg and family,
The beautiful words you shared about Susan made me feel her warmth and embrace, even with barely knowing her. From the few times I was fortunate enough to be in her company, however, I could certainly feel her kindness too. When you radiate that energy, it is captivating - and so very hard to be without. You are blessed to have had such beauty in your lives. Some people can go a lifetime without ever having that genuine kindness and love. She lives on in all of you.
We are all thinking of you here at Founders, sending love every day.

Susan was such a generous, funny and loving woman. She treated all of us girls just like another daughter. I have great memories of being at your house laughing in the kitchen with your mom and eating all the great goodies she would have. At Christmas time she would come over to our place when were roomies and decorate and bring the true Christmas Spirit and all the glitter that goes with it! She was so fun and what great memories. She loved you girls so much and wanted nothing but the best for you and it was seen in everything she did. Suzanne and Rebecca she truly was a special lady and will be missed beyond. My heart aches for you all during these time. Love you.

Susan was such a fun person to know and work with! I had the pleasure of working with her at Addition-Elle and she was awesome with our customers and always made them feel special when they came into our store. Our team had a lot of laughs with Susan which always came natural with her and her family.
Susan also knew how to throw a great Christmas gathering and we had fun at her house on many occasions enjoying her hospitality and her cooking. And oh all those beautiful trees, she had one in every room!
You will certainly be missed by all your family and friends.
Love you Susan!
My condolences to you all; thinking of you often at this time.
