William Joseph Byrne

65, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2008, with his family by his side after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born May 23, 1943, a son of Michael Byrne of Haricot NL, and Carmel Brennan of Cornerbrook, NL. A long-time resident of Dartmouth, "Billy" is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carmelle (LeClerc); daughter, Michelin (Glenn), Brampton, Ont.; son, Tony (Brian), Cambridge, Ont.; grandchildren, Alexandra and Ashley, Brampton, Ont.; siblings, Mary Ellen (Don), Vernon, Una, Dartmouth; Theresa (Janie), Terrance Bay; Josephine (David), Kemptville; Michael (Sharon), Vancouver, B.C.; Terry (Deanna), Berwick; Michelle (Steve) Vernon; Kim, Ajax, Ont. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and great-nieces and nephews. Billy was predeceased by his mother, Carmel (Brennan) and brother, "Eddie". Billy was a long-time member of the IBEW Local 625. He was also a long-time member of Brightwood Golf and Country Club, where he served on the Board of Directors, as well as numerous other committees. He was also the "Road Manager" for several Rose bowl competitions throughout the maritimes. As well, he was an active member of the Dartmouth Curling Club and the Austinville Owl's Club. Billy was also an accomplished pool player in various leagues over the years. A friend to all, Billy was only too willing to lend a helping hand to neighbours, family and club members, and was often overheard upon completion of the task "catch up with me later". Billy took great pride in entertaining children as Santa Claus and will forever be remembered as the "Magic Man". He will be sadly missed. Cremation has already taken place, but visitation will take place in A.L. Mattatall's Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth, NS B2Y 2J5, Tuesday, December 30, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Mass will be celebrated in St. Clement's Catholic Church, Gaston Road, Dartmouth, Wednesday, December 31 at 12 p.m. family flowers only.
