

Pitcairn, William Barrie- 59, of Lower Sackville, passed away Feb. 3, 2014 at home surrounded by family. Born in Windsor he was the son of the late Rev. Andrew and Mildred (Hunter) Pitcairn. Barrie had a long career in the military starting when he joined the West Nova Scotia Regiment in 1970 followed by a transfer to the Princess Louise Fusiliers in 1972. He joined the Regular Force and was posted to 2nd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment in 1980. He moved to Baden, Germany and 3 RCR in 1982. Barrie took a short break from the Canadian Forces from 1983 to 1986 when he rejoined and was posted again to 2 RCR. In 1990 he was posted to 1 Nova Scotia Highlanders in Springhill to return to Gagetown in 1992 as a member of 2 RCR. He went on Op Cavalier twice, 1992-93 and 1994-95. He was assigned to the Infantry School as an instructor in 1998. In 2000 the battalion called him back and Barrie returned to 2 RCR. In 2001 he was posted to the West Nova Scotia Regiment. Upon his retirement from the regular force in 2006, he transferred to the West NS Regiment as a reservist. Barrie spent from 2007-2013 in full time employment as a member of AATC Det Aldershot. Barrie is survived by his wife of 24 years Valerie Lynn Pitcairn; son Robert Pitcairn, Calgary, Alberta; daughters Jillian Hopkins (Jaret Phillips), Eastern Passage and Jennifer Pitcairn, Winnipeg, Manitoba; brothers Brian Pitcairn, Slave Lake, Alberta and Douglas Pitcairn, Dartmouth, N.S.; grandchildren Breanna Cosby and Paige Phillips, Eastern Passage, N.S. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb. 6 in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth from 2-4 and 6-8. Funeral service will be held on Friday, Feb. 7 at 10:00 a.m. in 12 Wing Shearwater Chapel, Rev. Bruce Murray officiating, followed by burial in St. John’s Cemetery. No flowers by request.
