Ruth was born September 5, 1939 on the family farm in Metropolis, IL. She was the youngest of eleven children, born to Luther and Lottie Fuqua. Her fondest childhood memories were made working on the farm with her daddy. She learned a strong work ethic that continued for her entire life. Ruth was one of the first female head custodians for the Davenport Public School System and received her Boiler Certification in 1982.
In 1954 Ruth was married to JR Kem and to this marriage four children were born – Ruth Ann (Jay) Jennings, Jerry (Debbie) Kem, William (Carla) Kem and Connie (Keith) Phillips. They later divorced. In 1983, Ruth was united in marriage to Pat Troup. Ruth and Pat were foster parents to the child who would later become their grandson.
Ruth was a fan of stock car races and a “Die Hard” Cubs fan. She was a faithful member of the Baptist church for her entire life. Ruth was a devoted and joyful servant of the Lord. One of the ways this proved to be true was many of the church youth referred to her as mom. Ruth was also involved with the QC Walk to Emmaus as well as the Bible Study Fellowship ministry. She had a great sense of humor and never met a stranger. Ruth was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, daughter, sister and friend to all.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Pat; her four children and their spouses; eleven grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings.
At the end of any conversation, Ruth was very likely to point her finger at you and say very clearly; “If you need ANYTHING just call me.”
