Betty Jane Spalding

Betty Jane Spalding, 89, of Troy, MI, formerly of Davenport, passed away peacefully September 3, 2012 at home surrounded by her loving children. Funeral mass will be 10:00 AM Monday, September 10, 2012 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church Davenport. Visitation will be 2-7 PM Sunday at the Runge Mortuary with a rosary to be said at 6:00 PM Burial will be in the National Cemetery Rock Island, IL. Betty was born April 29, 1923 in Montpelier, IA to Lee & Essie (Wiseman) Wainscott Sr. Betty proudly served in the US Navy during WWII stationed in the Navy Post Office at Norman, OK. On September 13, 1948 she was united in marriage to Paul Joseph Spalding in Davenport. They were happily married for 28 years until Paul’s death in 1977. Betty had worked at Wagner Printers in Davenport and more recently for 15 years at HyVee Food Stores as a food demonstrator where she was highlighted in a Dec. 6th 1987 QC Times article.

Betty was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. She loved spreading her smile and never met a stranger. She enjoyed baking, gardening, embroidery, going for walks, dining out, and spending time with family and friends. Her life’s stories, jokes, and laughter will be missed.

Survivors include daughters Barbara Cummings, Clinton TWP, MI, and Paula (Steve) Buffa, Bloomfield Hills, MI; son Terence (Cynthia) Spalding, Batavia, IL; six grandchildren: Beth Ann Semones, Nicholas and Joseph Spalding, Katie and Kendall Allard, and Rachael Spalding; four great grandchildren: Alexis and Brett Brillo, Joseph (JT), and Jacob (Jake) Spalding; brother Lee Wainscott, Muscatine, IA; and special brother-in-law Wayne Berry, Rock Island, IL.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son-in-laws: D. James Allard Jr. and Norman Cummings, sisters: Mae Wainscott, Fern Martz, Helen Martz, Berneal Wulf, Velma Dipple, Iona Berry; and brother Boyd Wainscott.
