Colleen Kay Youngman was born on October 1, 1951, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Milton Francis and Kathryn Arlene (Walker) Youngman. She graduated from Mediapolis High School, 1966. She attended Burlington Junior College for two years. In 1969, while in college, she was invited to compete in the Miss Burlington Bee Beauty Pageant. She was crowned Miss Burlington Bee of 1969 and was awarded college scholarship funds. Colleen was a beautiful person on the inside as well as the outside. She married Roger Wallace on December 19, 1969 in Burlington, Iowa. They had 2 children. Colleen was a fulltime homemaker. Once both children reached school age, Colleen took a part-time job with the Davenport Community School District. She worked as a Para-Educator for 29 years at Buchanan Elementary School. While there, she received the HUG Award. The award is given to Para-Educators by a vote of the teachers whom they feel had shown exceptional service and dedication to the Buchanan students. She retired in September 2010. That was Colleen. All who knew her would tell you that she cared much more for others than she ever did for herself. She loved kids and she loved helping them learn and grow. Most rewarding of all, the kids loved her back. Whenever out shopping or dining, former students would come up to her and ask, “Aren’t you Mrs. Wallace from Buchanan?” She was the kind of caring person who left an indelible impression with everyone she met. She loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her “Thirsty Thursday” group from Buchanan. Her favorite pastime was boating on the Mississippi River with her family. She was a very caring and giving person. She had a kind and loving heart and will be missed by the many friends she made during her lifetime.Survivors include her husband, Roger Wallace, Davenport; a son, Brian Wallace, Rock Island, IL; a daughter Christina Wallace and husband Ed Estelle and grandchildren Kyla Borcherding and Jackson Estelle and step-grandsons Joey and Eric Estelle of Bristow, VA; cousins, Joyce Butler, Mediapolis, IA, Yvonne Gray, Gladstone, IL, and Leola Ulrich, Quincy, IL; brother-in-laws and sister-in- laws, Joe and Kathy Wallace, Washington, IA, and Bob and Kathy Breuer, Burlington, IA; three nieces and four nephews.
