Visitation will be 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, February 28, at Weerts Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 1, also at Weerts Funeral Home. Delores was born on November 17, 1935, in Anamosa, Iowa, the daughter of Roy K. and Ethel (Sarby) Miller. She married the love of her life, James (Jim) Black on June 27, 1954 in East Moline, IL. and they had three daughters.
Delores attended East Moline schools graduating from UTHS in 1953. Her dream of becoming a teacher was fulfilled in 1971, when she graduated from Marycrest University. Her brother, whom she highly respected, gave her this advice “teaching is not a job, but an opportunity and new opportunities come with each day”. You never heard her say “I have to go to school today”, but rather “I get to go to school today”. She taught 1st grade at Monroe School, in Davenport, for 27 years and loved the staff, parents and especially her students.
Delores and Jim traveled extensively from the time their girls were small starting with a four person tent and a one wheel trailer. They not only traveled with their daughter’s, they continued traveling with their grandchildren and great grandchildren. After upgrading through several trucks and trailers, they retired and bought a motor home spending the winter in Florida. However, they were always home to spend holidays with their family. Delores loved to camp along mountain streams in Colorado and her favorite trip was when they drove to Alaska. They also enjoyed several cruises. On their 55th anniversary they took their family on a Disney land-sea vacation. Delores and Jim enjoyed antiques, biking, golfing, and working in their yard. Her biggest joy was her family. If you knew Delores it wasn’t long and you knew her family. She loved everyone coming for holiday dinners or just stopping by to visit. She also enjoyed attending the families’ sports and music events. Although health issues slowed her down in recent years, she and Jim had 66 ½ wonderful years of memories together.
In earlier years Delores was active at Moline Gospel Temple as a Sunday School Superintendent, Teacher and also enjoyed singing in the choir.
She is survived by her loving husband Jim; Daughters, Deanna (Mike) Kight and Janice Black; Grandchildren, Kirsten Kearns, Matthew (Abby) Andrews and Aimee Marple; Great Grandchildren, Blake, Madison and Brysen Andrews, Anna and Grace Marple; Step-Granddaughter, Angela Kight and Step-Great Granddaughter, Rylee Carver.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Daughter and Son-in-Law, Lynette and Doug Andrews; Brother, John E. Miller and Sister, Shirley Miller Barnett.
The family would like to thank all those who provided excellent care to Delores the last seven years, Dr. Keeven and staff, Moline; Radiology physicians and nurses at Unity Point-Trinity West Campus, Rock Island; Dr. Cotler of Loyola University, Chicago and nursing staff at Heartland Clinic, Moline; and Unity Point Hospice. The care provided by all of these wonderful health care workers contributed to Delores having more time to make memories with her family.
