Ed Smith, lifelong resident of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away peacefully on the evening of July 4th, 2024, surrounded by family. Devoted husband, loving father, and adored grandfather and great-grandfather, he was a friend to everyone he knew, and much beloved.
Edward Louis Smith was born October 31, 1927, to Charles and Jennie Smith, the third of five children. After serving his country in the Navy during WWII, he was married in 1947 to Betty Ann Roeh, also of Bettendorf, and together they raised their six children in the town they both loved, surrounded by a large and loving extended family. Ed was employed at ALCOA in Davenport for 40 years and remained active in ALCOA retirement groups.
Ed was an avid outdoorsman. He hunted and fished with his father as a child and continued that tradition with his own children. To celebrate turning 65, he and his sons took a weeklong fishing trip to the Canadian boundary waters, a treasured memory. As a teenager, he was introduced to golf when he worked as a caddie at the Davenport Country Club. He loved the game and encouraged his family to play, leading to many fun family golf outings. He continued to golf with his buddies into his nineties. Ed also enjoyed playing poker, bowling, coaching his children’s sports teams, supporting his grandchildren’s activities, and following his beloved Cubs.
Ed was predeceased by his wife Betty Ann, brothers Chuck and Jim, daughter Jannine, and son Dave. In addition to his sisters, Lorraine and Dolores, Ed is survived by sons Steve (Ann), Tom (Debra), Jeff (Mary), daughter Shelly (Kyle Hodde), daughter-in-law Barb, and son-in-law Henry Givray as well as twelve grandchildren, and fifteen (and counting) great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 4:00-7:00pm Friday, July 19th, at Weerts Funeral Home, 3625 Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. A funeral service will be held at 10:00am Saturday, July 20th, at Weerts Funeral Home, followed by a private family burial at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery.
