“Genie”, as she preferred to be called, “..you can call me anything, really, but don’t call me late for dinner!”, often kindly corrected people when they called her Gladys or Imogene, her given name. Kind, stoic, patient, and loving…Born March 20th, 1939, in Davenport, Iowa. She was part of a larger family of 13, working hard from a young age to support and care for younger brothers and sisters. Dedication to family embedded with sparkle and joy in the little things…led her to marriage to Richard Crow, whom she met while working as a ‘car hop’, wearing roller skates and serving food. He teased her, ‘Can I drive you home tonight?’ She said yes, and they married September 17th, 1960. They had two children, Julie and Rob. She stayed at home, relishing being at home to raise their children. When Julie was 16, Genie had created that tradition of meeting weekly to share the week’s moment, laughs, songs, and to ‘solve the world’s problems’.
Genie enjoyed long walks with Richard and their dogs, over the years. They spent glorious days in their gardens, pool, and going on dates, throughout their marriage. Circa ’21 Dinner Theater was a favorite! Sunday drives, with the kids in the back of their sports car, going for ice cream, continued after the kids were grown and gone. She loved her husband, flowers, hummingbirds, butterflies, children, and puppies.
Genie returned to work at Blain’s Farm and Fleet for 15 years, prior to retirement. During that time, she would save one day per week to spend with her two grandchildren, Stephanie and Elliott. True to her heart, she created the tradition of “Grandma Crow Day”.
After retirement, she would make time to meet friends from Farm & Fleet, the Davenport Athletic Club, and the YMCA, for lunch at various restaurants around town. She always greeted friends and family with a hug, and a smile, “…if you don’t have a smile, take one of mine…”
Survivors include her husband, Richard; daughter, Julie (Tom) Townsend-Leavell, Davenport; her two grandchildren, Stephanie (Jordan Likes) Townsend and Elliott Townsend; and her brother Al (Becky) Kroeger.
Genie was preceded in death by her son, Robert Crow, and 11 siblings.
