Gordon Wallace Coon

Gordon W. Coon, 94, formerly of Blue Grass and Davenport, passed away June 28, 2016. Following cremation, private inurnment will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. Gordon was born April 14, 1922 in Iowa City, Iowa, a son of James and Emma (Hendrickson) Coon. He married Laurena Matthes. She preceded him in death in 2010, following 67 years of marriage. Gordon served in the US Army during World War II. He was a retired carpenter having worked for various Quad City contractors for approximately forty years and was a member of Carpenters Local #4 of Davenport for sixty plus years.

Survivors include: a daughter, Rebecca J. Birks; grandchildren: Carlton W. (Kristin) Coon, Amy J. (Matthew) Hassig, and Ryan J. (Sarah) Coon; great-grandchildren: McKenna Coon, Ciara Coon, Bridget Birks, Nicole Birks, and Bailey Hassig; a great-great-grandson Atley Smith, another great-great-grandson, expected in November, and a daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Coon. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Gordon W. Coon, Jr., two sisters and a brother.
