James “Jim” Simpson, 63, of Rock Island, passed away on August 19, 2021 at the University of Iowa Hospitals. Per his wishes cremation rites have been accorded. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday August 25, 2021 at the Rock Island National Cemetery. The family requests if you wish to attend, please arrive at Weerts Funeral Home located at 3625 Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport, by 1:45 p.m. Memorials may be left to the family. Jim was born on April 16, 1958 in Dubuque, IA to Jim and Letha Simpson. Jim attended Wesleyan University from 1976 to 1977. He proudly enlisted in the United States Army from 1976 and retiring as an 11B infantry Squad Leader. Jim was united in marriage to Cherie Rice on July 9, 2009 in Rock Island, IL.
Jim was a member of various organizations including the American Legion, A.B.A.T.E. Club of Illinois, Moose Club, Combat Veterans Motor Cycle Association (CVMA), and the VFW. Jim enjoyed golf outings, riding his motorcycle. Jim enjoyed volunteering his time to many organizations and anyone who needed a helping hand. He loved to go on camping trips with his wife Cherie. They would spend winters traveling to Arizona and Florida. Jim also had a big heart for the animals in his life.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife Cherie; his step children, Brad Rice, Brent Rice, John Rice and Tienna Glenn; 15 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; his sister, Carolyn (Al) Smemo; and his nephew, Brian Duffy.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Letha Simpson; two grandsons, Brandon Rice and Tyler Rice.
