Justus W. Townsend

Funeral services for Justus W. “Wink” Townsend, 91, of Bettendorf, IA will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Monday, October 4, 2010 at the Cunnick-Collins Mortuary chapel in Davenport. Interment will be at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #26. Mr. Townsend died on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at Jersey Ridge Retirement Center in Davenport.Justus Winfield Townsend was born in Bettendorf, IA on January 28, 1919, the son of Thomas and Vivian (Dellitt) Townsend. He served in the United States Army as a Private 1st Class during World War II. Following his military service, he married Gloria D. Wilson in 1944 and they had two children, Martin and Rebecca. They later divorced in 1958. In 1964, Justus married Helen M. Pine-Ossowski. She preceded him in death in 2009. Mr. Townsend worked as an electrical engineer for Bendix Corporation from 1956-1982. He then worked at Swen Sonic Corporation until his retirement in 1990. He enjoyed playing the organ and riding motorcycles. He was an accomplished airplane pilot and enjoyed flying his personal plane. Mr. Townsend traveled all over the world, except for Japan.He is survived by a Daughter: Rebecca Ryan of Davenport; a Son: Martin (Brenda) Townsend of Davenport; a Stepdaughter: Carol Temple of Miami, FL; a Stepson: Chet (Cindy) Ossowski of Irvine, CA; a Sister: Vivian Tinker of Riverdale, IA; a Brother: Howard (Marie) Townsend of Davenport; 10 Grandchildren and 7 Great-grandchildren.In addition to his wife, Helen, he was preceded in death by four brothers: Jack, Roger, Keith, and Clyde Townsend.Memorials may be directed to the family.
