Mike was born on August 17, 1941, in Ipswich, England, to Dorothy Smith. He migrated to the U.S. on January 1, 1947, with his mother. Mike was a 1959 graduate of Davenport High School. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1959-1962. While in the Navy, he was stationed in Scotland.
On April 24, 1965, he was united in marriage to Sandra E. Kirkpatrick. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage until her passing in April 2025. For most of his adult life, Mike was an Engineering Technician at the US Army Corps of Engineers. He retired in 2004 after 36 years of service.
Mike was very involved in the community. He was a member of Quad Cities Bicycle Club, Davenport Amateur Radio Club, Davenport Sailing Club, Corvair Club, Porsche Club of America along with many others. He also volunteered with the Bix 7 race, Quad City Triathlon, Floatzilla and many others. He was known for being “the car guy” and would always go out of his way to help with car repairs for others. While he loved all those things, he especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Those left to cherish his memory include children, Julie (David) Thompson and Brian (Kerry) Smith; brother, Lester (Carol) Leonard; brother-in-law, Roger (Janet) Kirkpatrick; many nephews, nieces and lifelong friends.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sandra; and sister-in-law, Ardis (Jerome) Rettler.
The family would like to thank Mercy One Genesis and Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for their excellent care.
