Michael was born on June 28, 1950, in Toledo, Ohio to Virginia Louise (Sheets) and Gordon Wood Stewart. He grew up in DeWitt, Iowa, where he graduated from Central Community High School in 1968. Following his education at Scott Community College, where he earned an associate degree, Michael dedicated his life to serving others and building a close-knit family.
In 1973, he married the love of his life, Bernadette Johnson,and together they created a life filled with laughter, love, and adventure. Michael began his career as a police officer in DeWitt, proudly serving for over four years. He later served as a security shift manager for the Davenport Caterpillar Plant, bringing his expertise and leadership to a new arena. Michael concluded his professional journey as a manager for River Cities Management, retiring in 2017.
Michael's passions extended beyond work and family. He enjoyed music from all genres. A gifted singer, he could often be found singing along with his favorite songs. He was an avid supporter of Iowa Hawkeye football and wrestling, known for his spirited banter with close friends Chuck and Fletch. He found peace in the great outdoors, enjoying fishing and cherished family trips to Canada's Lake of the Woods where he created lifelong memories with his loved ones. His stories and laughter on those trips will be fondly remembered by all who joined him. Family was Michael's greatest joy.
Michael was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and an enduring sense of humor that will forever inspire those who knew him. His memory will be cherished by his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched.
Michael is survived by his devoted wife of over 50 years, Bernadette, his children, Matthew Stewart (Katie) and Erin Valenti (Mark), his beloved grandchildren Kate, Cael, Grace and Hayden, and brother Terry Stewart (Lynda). He was preceded in death by his parents Gordon and Louise Stewart and brother, Gregory Stewart.
A visitation to honor Mike will be held on January 9, 2025 from 4:00 to 7:00pm. The funeral service will be held Friday, January 10, 2025 at 10:00am. Both at The Runge Mortuary & Crematory. The burial will be a private ceremony.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to First Presbyterian Church in Muscatine, Iowa.
