June 30, 1948 – Jan. 8, 2026
Harold “Sam” Schneider, 77, of Davenport, passed away in the early morning hours of Jan. 8, 2026, with his wife of 55 years by his side. Sam was born on June 30, 1948, in Davenport to Harry and Marge (Knack) Schneider. Sam attended school in Davenport, where he participated in FFA and showed steers, though most of his time was spent working on the family farm. He graduated in 1966. After high school, Sam worked for a short time at a gas station in Spokane, where he met the love of his life, Verna Olsen. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1968 and proudly served as a member of the Navy Seabees, including a two-year deployment to Vietnam. After returning home, Sam and Verna were married on August 29, 1970. They moved to Rocklyn, where they farmed and ranched together for more than five decades, building a life together rooted in hard work, family, and love. Their first son, Jason, was born in 1978, followed by Matthew in 1979. Sam was known for his incredible work ethic, quiet nature, quick wit, generous heart, and remarkable strength. Stories still circulate about him throwing 100-pound hay bales—one in each hand—up onto the stack. He possessed an enduring strength and perseverance through everything life brought his way. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 25 years ago, Sam endured daily debilitating pain and chronic illness with grit and determination, rarely complaining. If you ever mentioned you needed a new piece of equipment, Sam would either send you dozens of ads to look at—or simply go out and buy it for you. Aside from harvest and weaning season, Sam’s favorite time of year was Christmas. He loved baking Christmas cookies and candy. He also enjoyed his purple semi, going to bull sales, photography, fishing in Curlew with his grandkids, and playing cards—especially pinochle and BS, which could get quite animated. He was also a proud member of the VFW in Spokane for many years. His legacy will live on through his family, the farm and ranch that he built and the lives that he touched. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Marge Schneider, and his sister, Dixie Scott, and brother-in-law, Jim Scott. He is survived by his wife, Verna; his sons, Jason (Angie) and Matthew (Sydney); his grandchildren, Sam, Addie, and Madison Schneider; and his sisters, Bonnie Schneider and Jackie Johnson; Nieces and nephews, many close friends and special people including Jason (April) Shumway. At Big Sam’s request no formal service will be held. A private graveside burial will take place January 21, at the Washington State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 1:00pm followed by a gathering to share funny stories and fond memories of Sam at the farm at 5:00pm. Strate Funeral Home of Davenport is caring for the family.
