Wanda was born on February 26th 1922 in Beaverlodge, Alberta, Canada to her parents, Harry and Anna Carrell. At 7 years old she emigrated with her family from Canada and settled in the Yakima Valley where she resided through her graduation from Toppenish High School. In 1944 she graduated from Central Washington College (University) in Ellensburg, WA with a degree in geography and art. Wanda was fond of spending her college summers at Mt Rainier National Park working as souvenir manager of the gift shops at Sunrise and Paradise. Upon graduation from college, she taught 3rd grade in Vancouver, WA and Yakima, WA. While in Yakima, Wanda met the love of her life, Ted Janett, on a blind date arranged by Ted’s sister, Dorothy. Despite the miles between them, their whirlwind courtship through letter writing and visits led to their marriage on September 10, 1950. Following the wedding, the Janetts started married life in Reardan, WA and shortly thereafter purchased their farm home and property nearby where their family was raised. Wanda dedicated her time to raising their two children and supporting all of the moving pieces that come with farm life. Meals were prepared for hay and harvest crews, cookies were baked for community and church events, fruit was canned in the fall, and her flower and vegetable gardens were overflowing (and shared with many). After retirement from farming, Ted and Wanda enjoyed spending their winters in Kauai where they built friendships and community across the island. Following Ted’s passing, Wanda remained on the farm for several years before transitioning to live in Olympia with her daughter Christi and then Olympics West Retirement Inn in Tumwater. She enjoyed walks daily and spending time with family, including her sister Wilma. Together they travelled to Ocean Shores often and loved their time on the beach.
Wanda was a kind and caring woman who was strong in faith and passionate about music. She played piano at her church, many community organizations, and daily at her home, always sharing her love of music with others, especially her daughters. Wanda enjoyed gardening, sewing, and cooking for everyone around her as caring for others was a calling of hers. She was active in her community including: Order of Eastern Star, Spring Creek Grange, Lincoln Hospital Auxiliary, Reardan Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Women.
The family would like to thank Olympics West staff and caregivers for their loving care of Wanda. They always appreciated her sweet smile and “thank you” given back to them during her care. During the final weeks of Wanda’s life, the Providence Hospice team surrounded her and our family with unwavering love and care. We will be eternally grateful to both organizations.
Wanda is survived by her two daughters Joann Stoltz (Terry) and Christi Janett; her sister Wilma Groeschell; her brother, Ted Carrell; four grandchildren April Stoltz, Jackie Humphrey, Kiley Floor and Kelsey Floor; and two great-grandchildren Caden and Makenzie Stoltz. She was preceded in death by her husband Ted and sister Olive Jane Phillips.
A memorial service will take place on October 7th at 2:00 pm at Reardan Presbyterian Church. Wanda’s memory would be honored by a donation to Reardan Presbyterian Church (PO Box 209, Reardan, WA 99029) or Lincoln Hospital Foundation (10 Nicholls St, Davenport, WA 99122). Please sign the on-line guest book at www.stratefuneralhome.com. Strate Funeral Home, DAVENPORT, WA, is caring for the Janett family.
