Barbara Ann (Smith) Sonderup, age 80, died peacefully at her home in Beavercreek on July 22, 2023. Born in Abington, PA, Barb was a long-time Ohio resident living in both Beavercreek and Troy. Barbara is survived by her husband Dale, daughter Trish Hill, son-in-law Kevin Hill, grandson Cody Hill and many extended family members. She was part of a very close group of girlfriends from PA, who have all been together since the first grade. Barb met her husband, Dale, when they were employees at the H.J. Ferguson Co. in Jenkintown, PA where Barb was a phone operator and Dale a scheduler. They married on November 10, 1962.
During her working years, Barb is best known for her time as the manager of the Troy, Miami Citizens Bank (later Fifth Third), Sherwood branch. She dedicated many hours to her customers and went above and beyond helping many of them with their budgeting, statement balancing and attaining loans. She loved her job, was a mentor and friend to her employees, and always took time for her customers to talk about whatever was on their mind. She was well respected by all. Even as she got older and remembering things got a bit more difficult, she was still good with numbers.
Barb and Dale loved socializing and especially playing games. They spent each night playing various board and card games, with the loser adding dollars to a game fund used to donate to their favorite organizations or for a special dinner.
Barb loved to shop and particularly liked to surprise people with beautifully wrapped gifts for no reason at all other than ‘I saw this and thought of you’. She had a soft spot for animals and always had very spoiled dogs, but her greatest joy was spending time with friends and family, especially her grandson Cody.
A celebration of life open house will be held Thursday August 3, 2023, at the East room of the Hayner Cultural Center, 301 West Main St., Troy from 5-7pm. Donations can be made to the Greene County Humane Society, the Miami County Animal Shelter, the ASPCA, or any animal related charity.
