

Born July 21, 1924 in Dayton, OH to Paul & Gertrude Hellwig. He graduated from Stivers HS class of 1942, then enlisted in the Army in 1943. George was wounded in Germany (Ruhr pocket) in April 1945 and honorably discharged in May 1946 with disability. He reenlisted in May 1949, and retired in November 1950. He received several Military awards including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, good conduct and various campaign awards.George retired from Standard Register after 40 plus years of service.
He was a member of various organizations including: MOPA, DAV, VFW, AL, DAVAMP, TREA, NAUS, NCOA, Flyers Club, Shiloh Athletic Club, Kentucky Colonel, lifelong member of Hope Lutheran Church.
George is predeceased by his wife of 65 years Jean; sons, Ronald Hellwig & George Hellwig; sister, Mary & husband Dick Bowen; sister, Anna & husband Winston Ferguson. He is survived by his daughter, Paula & husband Bill Barrows; son, James Hellwig and wife Rita; granddaughter, Veronica & husband Geoffrey Kannan; great grandson, George Kannan; grandson, George A. Hellwig; granddaughter, Crystal Hellwig.
George followed the Cincinnati Reds, UD Flyers and Cleveland Browns dating back to his childhood and attended games for over 70 years.During celebration of his 94th birthday at the Oakwood Club George enjoyed his favorite meal, liver & onions with two glasses of red wine, and stated that “he has had a wonderful life”! A funeral service will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at Woodland Cemetery Mausoleum 118 Woodland Ave. Dayton, Ohio. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 from 5pm until 7pm at Tobias Funeral Home- BELMONT CHAPEL.
