

Joseph Harry Madden, 79, passed away on 7 October 2023. He was born to Lola (Davenport) and Harry Madden on January 3, 1944 in Toledo, Ohio. On July 30, 1966 he married Trudi Ann Stump and they had four children Joy, Bob, Brian and Scott. He married Mary Jones on March 27, 1993 and gained a stepdaughter Kathy, and a step son John. He leaves behind his wonderful wife of 30 years, Mary, his daughter Joy Madden, his son Bob Madden and his wife Jennifer, his son Brian Madden, his son Scott Madden and his wife Rebekah, and his stepson John Fisher. He is preceded in death by his stepdaughter Kathy Mangold. He also leaves behind his brother Jack and his wife Deborah, his sister Bonnie and her husband Jack, his sister Shirley and her husband Fred, his sister Nancy, his sister Gloria, as well as his 13 grandchildren. He graduated with honor from St. Francis DeSales High School in 1962 and then from the University of Toledo in 1966. He received his Master’s Degree from Bowling Green State University and had over 50 hours beyond a Master’s Degree from various universities. He was an educator for 35 years holding positions as an English teacher, Vocational teacher, Assistant Principal, School Guidance counselor, Director of Adult Education and Middle School Athletic Director. He had a love of sports and coach basketball for 24 years, at Wapakoneta St. Joseph, Centerville, Chaminade Julienne, and Miami Valley School. 14 years of those were at the Varsity level. He won eight coach of the year awards and was a member of the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame. He also coached Baseball, Track and Cross Country at the Varsity level as well. He was a long-time member of the Centerville Noon Optimist Club. He was also a member of the Greene Optimist Club which he helped build. He held numerous positions including Secretary for 19 years. He was a Distinguished Club President, a Distinguished Governor of the Ohio District and is an elected member to the Ohio District Hall of Fame. He received the Builder of Excellence Award and was at level 10, the highest, in the Professional Growth and Involvement program. Other awards included: Optimist of the year, Christian D. Larson winner, and Educator of the Year. He will be remembered for his sense of humor. There were no bad jokes and if there were, he would laugh at them anyway. He felt the day was a loss if he didn’t make someone laugh or at least smile. KEEP SMILING.
