During a layover here in Frankfurt, I was just thinking about how many people I could remember from high school, a time almost forty years ago. These weren't the occasional friend that I kept track of for years or decades after, or the hordes of faceless people that passed around me like water. I was thinking about a handful of souls who impacted me briefly and then were carried away by the current. To pass the time, I put the names of about five or so (that had distinctive enough surnames that there was any hope of quickly finding them) into the digital ether to see what became of their lives.

Keith was one of these five, and it appears, unfortunately, that my hook pulled up his obituary.

In ninth grade or so, I was the occasional target of a particular bully. In between classes, at the top of a stairwell, I had another encounter with this individual. I can't remember what happened this time, knocking my books asunder or tripping me or shoving me. There was verbal abuse as well.

Quite suddenly, Keith appeared and roughly pushed this ruffian against the green tile wall. Then he pinned the other boy by the neck with his forearm, choking him. He just stared with a stony expression as the bully gasped. I can't recall him even saying anything.

Eventually released, my problem quickly slunk away as we stood watching.

"Thank you, Keith." 

He nodded and then walked on. I don't think he said a word to me. As I recall, I was never bothered by that particular person again. And I have a long memory.

I also don't recall having much contact with Keith before or after. We must have had one class together before, and perhaps none thereafter. Over 600 graduates poured out of that hugh school every year.  But, in that moment, he saw a wrong occurring and went all in on stopping it. He acted without hesitation, as though he was reaching for the salt shaker.

I thought that moment should not be lost in time.

Keith was a friend of mine in High school, always had a smile on his face. Sorry you are gone. RIP.

So sad to hear of your passing dear friend.  I've known you since I was 12 and have fond memories of those years.  May you rest in piece Keith.

I am still in shock.  I knew he had health issues but didn't think this serious.  He was such a kind guy.  He was so protective of me when I broke my leg and was in rehab. His kindness to me at that time will never be forgotten. 
He loved his family more than they will ever know. He spoke highly of all of them.  
Thank you Mrs. Wolford for sharing a peach pie with us.  It was delicious.  He was so proud of you.  My heart goes out to you.  No parents should have to lose a child. 
I pray your in no more pain and your at peace now my dear friend.  You won't be forgotten.

Keith had a heart of gold.  I dont want to believe this is true. We were friends since 14 and helped each other through some tough times. He was intelligent and politically aware. I will miss our talks.  His heart was kind and accepting. If you didnt know He loved the song Lost boy by Ruth B. Listen to it and think of him.  My prayers for his parents and children.

Sad to hear of this. We had been talking and hanging out a bit off an on the past few years. I knew he was having health issues and struggles. I will miss joking with him and reminiscing about old times.

Very sad to hear of Keith's passing. I talked to him not long ago and we shared some laughs. He will be missed by many.

So sorry to hear about Keith's passing. The last I spoke to him was about year ago and we talked for about an hour and he shared some of his struggles with me. I'm so sorry for the loss. I remember playing backyard football with he and Dave Sharp--another classmate who left us too early. Life is fleeting. Rest in Peace, Keith.
