Mary Jo went home to our eternal Father on February 11th, 2026 after an almost five-year battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Jack Berg, and her sister, Janet (Berg) Tobe. She is survived by her loving husband, Michael Leopard; her son, Jack; her daughter in law, Lauren; and the greatest joys of her life—her grandchildren, Vivienne and Charlie. She also leaves behind numerous extended family members, cherished friends, and coworkers who became a treasured part of her life and now remain a treasured part of her family’s lives.
Mary Jo’s interests were many, but above all she valued investing her time, energy, and generosity in the people she loved. She believed deeply in showing up for family and friends. She looked forward to every reunion, every celebration, every Friday or Saturday evening out with her husband, and any excuse at all to be surrounded by those she held close to her heart.
Mary Jo dedicated her professional life to caring for others. A registered nurse (Sinclair Community College), she spent an extraordinary 44½ years of her life caring for patients at Dayton Children’s Hospital, serving multiple departments including the NICU, pediatric unit and the operating room. With skill, dedication, and a caring heart, she provided comfort and hope to children and families during their most vulnerable moments. Her unwavering commitment to healing and service leaves a legacy that will be remembered with gratitude and admiration. She found great purpose in caring for her countless patients, supporting her teammates, and occasionally coaching a doctor or two. Her leadership was steady, compassionate, and rooted in a commitment to excellence.
Her family will receive visitors at Tobias Funeral Home, 3970 Dayton Xenia Rd, Beavercreek, Ohio on Thursday April 9, 2026 from 5pm to 7pm. As a devout follower of God, Mary Jo’s Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am on Friday April 10, 2026 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Beavercreek. She will be interred at Calvary Cemetery immediately following the burial Mass.
Our family is eternally grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and support over her cancer journey – she fought so valiantly to the end. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a financial contribution to Dayton Children’s Hospital, Hospice of Dayton, The Sisters of Notre Dame, or a charity that moves you.
Mary Jo’s legacy is, without question, one of selfless caring. In every part of her life, she consistently chose kindness—always striving to do right by others, even when it wasn’t easy. Our hope for you is to carry her spirit forward: keep your loved ones close, make time for friends as often as you can, and raise a Miller Lite or Michelob Ultra with a good laugh in her honor. May her warmth continue to live on in the way you love, gather, and celebrate life.
