Nancy Smith

Nancy was born in a small coal mining camp in Lyonsville, West Virginia, to the late Lawrence Baxter Leach, and the Late Bennie Mae (Marsee) Leach. She was proud of her humble beginnings, because it taught her to appreciate what she had, and the ability to help others.

On August 25, 1973, Nancy married the love of her life, Steve Smith. Together, they built a life filled with faith, family, and love, raising two children, Tami Byrum and Jason Smith. Nancy was a devoted mother and grandmother who adored her family and treasured every moment spent with them.

Nancy dedicated many years of her professional life to Foley Benefits, from which she eventually retired. Even in the workplace, she was known for her warmth and generosity—traits that also defined her personal life.

She was the proud grandmother of Chris (Mariah) Reese, Katie (Brooke) Byrum, Joanna (Levi) Burns, Samantha Smith, and Sophia Smith. She was also a great-grandmother to Jaylin Reese, Aleigha Mitchell, Akiera Mitchell, and Bryson Burns, and she eagerly awaited the arrival of Blair Burns.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Bennie Mae (Marsee) Leach; her beloved daughter, Tami; her brothers, Andrew J. Leach (who was married to Millie) and Cleadus Leach; her sister, Lanetta Ann (Cricket) Chandanais, and Lanetta’s husband, Larry Chandanais; and her sister-in-law, Judy Smith.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Steve Smith; her son, Jason Smith and his wife, Becca; her sister, Sharon, and brother-in-law, Paul Fulghum; her sister-in-law, Millie Leach; her brother-in-law, Tom Smith, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Nancy’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was an active and dedicated member of Trinity Missionary Church, where she found a second family among her church community. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith were an inspiration to all who knew her.

Nancy’s memory will forever be cherished by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
