David is survived by his wife, Inez Doerter and his three daughters Angela Doerter, Christina Doerter, and Maria Caceres, with two grandchildren Rafael and Valentina by Rafael Caceres.
Dave was born in Portland, Oregon on March 22, 1953, to Jim and Martha Doerter. He was the second of three children, Brian Doerter who is the oldest, and Susie Collins who is the youngest.
Between the years of 1959 and 1962, his family moved around the country several times while his father pursued his doctorate before finally settling in Ashland, Oregon. As a child, he had several unique experiences, some of which included living in lookout towers for two consecutive summers and taking a train across the country to see the 1968 World Fair in Montreal. Dave had a passion for basketball and played several years during middle and high school. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1971 and went on to attend three different colleges to complete his undergraduate studies, including the University of Oregon and Southern Oregon State College. In 1975, he worked as an assistant for the City Planner in Prineville, Oregon. In 1977, he became the City Planner of Talent, Oregon, and it was around this time that he met Inez Rodriguez, who became his wife. They were married on June 17th, 1979, and three years later, they had their first daughter, Maria. In 1985, David moved his family to Columbia, South Carolina, where he attended the University of South Carolina and obtained his Masters in Geographic Information Systems. In 1987, he accepted a position at Intergraph in Madison, Alabama and moved his family there. He had the opportunity to travel to multiple countries during this time. His second daughter, Christina, was born shortly after the move. In 1989, the family moved to Decatur, Alabama, where they settled for several years. In 1991, his third daughter Angela was born. After several years at Intergraph, he worked as a scheduler for other companies in Northern Alabama, including Jacobs in Huntsville and NASA.
Dave became a Christian in 1975 during his time in Prineville. He struggled with alcohol and drug use, but heard about hope through Jesus through the people at the local church potlucks, which he attended to save money on food. One night, he asked Jesus to be his Lord and Savior, and he instantly was relieved from the cravings of drugs and alcohol. After this, he never looked back. He found a home church and began to learn about Jesus. Throughout his life, he has been faithful to serve the Lord in many ways. He became involved in his community through the development of the Christian Coalition in 1992, helping voters to make informed decisions. He mentored young men and fathers throughout his life. Most importantly, however, he showed Christ through his life, by loving his family and those he came in contact with.
