James C. Farrish, Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, went home to his Savior on August 2, 2025, in Huntsville, Alabama, at the age of 85. Born on December 8, 1939, in Greenwood, Mississippi, Jim lived a life characterized by love, wisdom, and a commitment to his family and community.
Preceded in death by his parents, James C. Farrish, Sr. and Susie Kuykendall Farrish, Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Agnes Hovas Farrish, and their three children: Julie Farrish (Jeff) Pohl, James C. Farrish, Ill, and Philip (Paige) Farrish. He was a proud grandfather to Jesse Pohl (John) Glover, Georgia Farrish (Tucker) Ward, and Julia Farrish, who will carry on his legacy of love, strength, and generosity.
A graduate of Greenwood High School in 1957, Jim went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Mississippi State University in 1961, followed by a Masters in Business Management from the Florida Institute of Technology. His professional career included roles at Brookley Air Force Base and NASA, culminating in a fulfilling retirement from Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville where he worked as manager of Cost Analysis on the Hellfire Missile Project.
Jim was a founding member and deacon of Westmeade Baptist Church in Decatur, Alabama, and later served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Rogersville, Alabama. His dedication to his faith and community was evident in his leadership as chairman of the building committee for the Rogersville First Baptist Family Life Center in 1992.
Jim was a man of few words, but when he spoke, his family and friends listened closely, knowing that his insights were filled with wisdom and experience. He possessed a remarkable ability to solve problems and was known for his sharp intellect. An avid fisherman, Jim found joy and tranquility on the dock of his dream home on the Tennessee River in Rogersville, where he spent countless hours casting lines and enjoying the beauty of nature.
In addition to fishing, Jim had a passion for gardening. He nurtured a vibrant garden, where his green thumb brought forth bountiful crops each year. Among his favorite blooms were zinnias, which he lovingly grew for Agnes, often surprising her with fresh flowers when they were in bloom—a testament to his enduring love and thoughtfulness.
Jim's teachings extended beyond the garden and the dock; he instilled in his children the values of self-sufficiency and perseverance. His gentle guidance often came with the phrase, "Boy, I'm not gonna tell you how to do it, but if it were me..."—a reminder of his belief in empowering others to find their own way.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at 2 P.M. at Roselawn Cemetery in Decatur, Alabama, officiant Tommy Calhoun. Friends are invited to attend. We will gather to honor Jim's memory and the profound impact he had on their lives. Friends are invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in the name of James Farrish, Jr.
Rest in peace, Jim. Your love, wisdom, and generous spirit will forever remain in our hearts.
