Mark was the eighth of what would ultimately be the thirteen children of his now-grieving parents. Mark honorably served his country as both a U.S. Marine and a combat medic in the U.S. Army. “Doc” Meaney received the Army Commendation Medal with Valor for his selfless service in Iraq, where he “saved the lives of at least 7 soldiers and American civilians,” and “placed his life at risk to save the lives of men he had never met.”
After completing his military service, Mark returned home to Long Island to the delight of his family and many loved ones. Mark pursued his passions for photography, music, the ocean, landscaping, and spending time with friends and family. Mark spent his final years in New Braunfels, Texas, where he went by his middle name, Damien, and where he easily made new friends who reveled in his warm and welcoming personality and quick wit.
Mark had an uncanny ability to capture both the beautiful and the difficult parts of life, whether it be in meticulously edited photographs, poetic or clever language, the construction of a pond or stone walkway, or simply being present and engaged while you told him about what was troubling or inspiring you.
In addition to his grieving parents, Barbara and Frank, Mark Damien is survived by his heartbroken siblings and in-laws: Dorothy; Danielle and Eliot; Frank and Joan; John; Matthew and Elise; Paul and Wendee; Andrew; Susannah; Caroline; James; Maria; and Noelle and Francisco. Mark will also be dearly missed by dozens of nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins, as well as countless friends across many states.
