David Almeron Day, 87, entered Heaven's Gates Friday, April 17, 2026. He was a resident of Midwest City, OK since 1978, born to Clair A. Day and Olive Nina Price on June 10, 1937, in Franklin, PA. His childhood was spent in many locations throughout Ohio and Michigan as his father was a traveling evangelist. When he and his three younger sisters - Barbara Sue, Carole Hope and Constance Arlene, were entering their high school years their father took a pastorate in the Buffalo, NY area as he wanted to be near the small Christian College in Houghton, NY - now Houghton University. In 1956 David graduated in the first graduating class of Frontier Central, Hamburg, NY. In the fall of 1956, he enrolled in Houghton College. The family had moved to Houghton in the late 50's as the girls were ready for college. David worked many jobs to fund his education before graduating with a BA degree in 1960. Many of these jobs were construction and home improvement work. Later he took a job at the local post office and was there until November1961. Through his high school and college days he enjoyed and participated in sports of all kinds - especially baseball and football. He was a regular any time a group would gather to go roller-skating. He also loved his many pets - namely his dogs - Squeaky, Sam and most recently Trixie Belle.
At one of his renovation jobs, he met his future wife - Evelyn Smith. She babysat his boss's children and one afternoon, when she came home from her classes, she entered the bathroom of her house to find David and his boss Ev sitting on the edge of the tub replacing the tiles around the shower. She put the lid down on the toilet and sat down to visit with Ev inquiring about his wife and children. Ev asked if she knew David and with a negative response, they were formally introduced.
After his graduation, David and Evelyn were married on November 25, 1961 - the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Then on December 1,1961 - just 5 days later, David was inducted (drafted) into the United States Army. Following Basic Training at Fort Knox, he was assigned as a Clerk Typist at the Cleveland, Ohio Recruiting Station. Evelyn came to Cleveland soon after and she got a Clerk Typist job in the adjacent building, working for Shell Oil. Two years later, having fulfilled his commitment, he had decided to make the military a career - moving to the Air Force. A few months later he attended Officer Training School at San Antonio, TX. Thus began their life of moving from base to base, school to school. During these years his first two daughters arrived – Michelle and Cara. His next assignment was to Japan- unaccompanied. Expecting their third child, Evelyn moved back to her hometown in NY to be near her family and David was off to Japan. When he returned a year later Melissa was 9 mo. old and when she saw her father walking toward her, she took her very first steps. That year they moved to Japan for a three-year tour. Before returning to the states their son Michael arrived in November 1969.
It was 1970 when they returned to the US with their "3 n 1" to once again move from base to base and school to school. The next adventure was in 1976 when they had a two-year tour in Iran. They left there while the country was under Marshall Law in 1978. They arrived in OK on the last day of that year. David was assigned to 552nd AWAC Division at Tinker AFB.
They are still at the home they moved in to the last day of 1978. Since then, the family added on, to better accommodate their numbers. It was a family project. David did have a year in Korea unaccompanied in 1984/85. Back at Tinker and AWAC he served out his last Air Force years, retiring in 1989. With an "empty nest" David took a job in Saudi Arabia working with the Royal Saudi Air Force. Evelyn accompanied him.
While in Saudi, and during Desert Shield and Desert Storm, he was alone. They'd sent all the family’s home and he became depressed. This is when God got his attention. It was October 5th, 1990, when he asked Jesus to become his Lord and Savior. And soon after that he was able to make a brief trip to Oklahoma where arrangements were made for Ralph Speas to Baptize him before returning to Saudi.
Eight years later, in 1998, they returned to Oklahoma. David began to volunteer at First Southern Baptist Church and was later hired as a part of the maintenance staff. He counted it a privilege and a blessing to be the Lt Col who cleaned the toilets for the church. He continued to work there until he found it necessary to go to New York and care for his father who was nearly100. He remained there, despite his own failing health, until January 2017 when his father went to Heaven - just a few months after he turned 100.
During the past few years David kept busy puttering and fixing things. He enjoyed doing projects with and for his children, grandchildren and anyone else who asked for help. His woodworking skill diminished, but he discovered that crazy puzzles could be made with the bandsaw and a piece of 2x4. His collection of hats encircled his office. Puttering and fixing filled his final days at home. His favorite foods were mashed potatoes with gravy and ice cream.
David was predeceased by parents Clair and Olive Day, Sisters Barbara Day, Carole Hoyer, Constance Day, Nephew Ricky Hoyer, Niece Barbara Jo Green.
