

Gerald Chavez was born September 26, 1954 in Topeka, Kan. to Natalio G. and Vita (Hernandez) Chavez. He was baptized at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Topeka. Gerald’s deep faith was the center of his life. A devout Catholic who lived by his strong principles and convictions, he was also known for his compassion, intelligence, and his wit. Gerald was a longtime member of Saint Joseph Old Cathedral and Saint Paul Apostle Catholic Church. Del City and the surrounding community lost a great man on Feb. 6, 2017.
Gerald’s family moved to the Oklahoma City area, and he graduated from Southeast High School in 1972. He earned bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1976 and in 1978 earned his masters in education. Following college, Gerald became an elementary school English teacher as well as a teacher for students for whom English was a second language. During the summers he worked in local Mexican restaurants so that he could better learn the language and relate to his students.
His teaching career spanned almost 40 years in Crooked Oak (1978-79), Moore (1979-85), Oklahoma City (1985-2015) and Mid-Del (2015-present) school districts. Known for his boundless generosity and big heart, Gerald was thought of with fondness and respect by all that met him. Among his favorite things were dogs, flowers, the show “I Love Lucy,” and children.
Gerald is survived by his brother, N. Michael Chavez and wife, Susan; and numerous of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Natalio G and Vita Chavez; a brother, Tim Chavez.
