

Margie Ellen Shaw was born October 14, 1938 in Guthrie, Oklahoma to John Lawson and Vallie May Shaw. Margie is the oldest child, with one brother Ronald Shaw and two sisters who are twins, Fay Miller and Kay Ferris. She grew up in Guthrie and graduated from Guthrie High School in 1956. While attending an Officers club get together at Tinker AFB, she met James R Onkst of Greenville, Ohio and married October 12, 1959. Margie was a very loving mother and devoted wife. She has three children James S. Onkst of Yukon, Julie D. Deason of Midwest City, and Johnny D. Onkst of Tulsa, a daughter in-law Yvette Onkst and five grand children Cory Deason, Brian Deason, Megan Deason, Katie Onkst, and Gunner Onkst.
Margie graduated from Hills Business University in Oklahoma City. She furthered her studies at Rose State College in Midwest City and Dayton Technology Center in Ohio. Margie retired as a Logistics Officer from Tinker Air Force Base after 32 years and was secretary of the Tinker Federal Retirees Association.
Margie enjoyed playing the piano and especially had a love for sewing. She often made her formal dresses or quilted blankets. Margie’s primary interest was providing a home for her family and grandchildren. Her family was her gold. She enjoyed being involved in their actives and daily lives.
Margie in her circle of friends and many relationships was known to be quiet but dependable and very dedicated to her duties. She often volunteered for treasurer and secretarial duties because she knew her role and how best to use her skills. Margie was introduced to many Masonic organizations through her marriage and was initiated in Eastern Star Del City Chapter # 496 in 1963. She has been an active Star member for 47 years. She has served as Worthy Matron of the Del City Chapter in 1968 and 2006. She served the Del City Chapter as secretary many years. Margie was Chairman of the Chapter Ways & Means and By-laws committee and participated on the State Finance committee. She has served as District Deputy 5 times and is a member of the 500 club. She is a Past President of Oklahoma City Past Matrons Club, and active member of the Red Jacket Club. She is currently serving as the Grand Representative of Ohio. She was fortunate enough to serve the Oklahoma Grand Chapter as Grand Secretary from 1999 until October 2008. She was granted the title of Grand Secretary Emeritus at the 2008 Session. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Del City.
Margie served as Royal Matron in 1973 and 1987 of Williams-Gill Court #21 of the Order of Amaranth, She has served with many youth organization that included Rainbow, DeMolay and Jobs Daughters. She was a Mother Advisor for Del City Rainbow Assembly and Board member since 1970. She holds the Grand Cross of Color and Chairman of the Rainbow Board. Margie served as State President of the Oklahoma DeMolay Mother’s Club, and later elected Past State Mom of the Oklahoma DeMolay Association. Margie was a Certified Degree Judge, and was presented the DeMolay Cross of Honor. During her years of service she traveled over seas, much of the US, and all of Oklahoma visiting Eastern Star & Amaranth Chapters and seeing her wonderful Masonic family friends.
Funeral Services will be Friday, November 18, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. located at Bill Eisenhower Southeast Chapel, with interment to follow at Sunny Lane Cemetery. In lieu of flowers Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
