

Richard Leon Showalter passed away on April 19, 2016, at the age of 79. A native of Broadway, Virginia, Richard was born on August 25, 1936, to Wade and Dorothy (Berry) Showalter. He served 21.5 years of active duty in the Air Force and 20 years in civil service in the fields of communications, operations, and computer programming. He achieved the rank of Master Sergeant and completed a three-year civil service overseas tour to Ramstein Air Base in Germany before retiring in 1976. Even as Richard traveled the world, he always had a special place in his heart for his home state of Virginia. Richard’s hobbies included reading, traveling, and cheering on the OSU Cowboys. He was also passionate about volunteering for various organizations, including AARP and Skyline Urban Ministry.
Richard is survived by his wife of seven years, Dianna Showalter, his sisters, Ruby (Jim) Pence, Pearl Keister, and Marie Combs, his brother, Nelson (Orvilla) Showalter, and many relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother Clarence Showalter, his sister Nina Zikle, and his niece, Connie Showalter. Richard’s family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff and wives of the Norman Veterans Center.
