Cush proudly served his country in the United States Navy, where he was stationed in Wichita, Kansas, and was later honorably discharged. A hardworking and dedicated man, he built a long and successful career as a Certified Public Accountant. He was partner at LeBlanc Schexnayder & Associates and partner at LeBlanc Schexnayder, Inc, where his diligence and business sense earned the trust of many in the community.
He was active in civic life and leadership throughout his hometown. Cush held every office in the Rotary Club of Abbeville and He became a member of Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants in 1966 and stayed a member until 2020. He served Vice President and President over the local chapter. He was the treasurer of the Shrimp Festival Association and proudly served as Class President of the Delcambre High School graduating class of 1956.
Family and fellowship were central to his life. Cush had a lifelong love of the outdoors and especially enjoyed deer hunting as a member of Stump Hunting Club in Mississippi, where he served as club treasurer. He also loved camping, and he and his wife traveled together to all 50 states and several countries—building memories that will be cherished forever. At home, he enjoyed reading, cheering on the Saints and LSU football, and spending time with the many people who loved him.
Cush will be remembered for his gentle spirit, strong work ethic, and the kindness he shared with everyone he met. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Kelly Delcambre Schexnayder; his children, Marla S. Leleux (Ralph), Hedi S. Frederick (Gerald “J.R.”), Ken Schexnayder (Jamie), and Listi S. Arceneaux (Mark). He is also survived by his brothers, Darson Schexnayder (Liz) and Sydney Schexnayder III (Terry).
He leaves behind thirteen beloved grandchildren—Trent, Cody, Rodney, Jacob, Randy, Saige, Sieghan, Jagger, Broc-Lauryn, Maggie, Chace, Riley, and Cru—along with nine great-grandchildren: Tre, Caroline, Gabriella, Charles, Asher, Alec, Gia, Cecelia, and Beckham, with one more blessing on the way.
Cush was preceded in death by his parents, Sydney Schexnayder Jr. and Ophelia Sonnier Schexnayder; his brother, Burton Schexnayder; and his grandchild, Casey Frederick.
Pallbearers will be Trent Leleux, Cody Frederick, Rodney Leleux, Randy Leleux, Jacob Frederick, and Jagger Arceneaux. Honorary pallbearers are Chace LeBlanc, Cru Arceneaux, and Tre Leleux.
Visitation will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home, on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with a Rosary led by the Men’s Rosary Groups at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, on Thursday, December 11, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Fr. Buddy Breaux will officiate. Interment will follow at the church mausoleum with Military Honors.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Traditions Hospice for their kindness, generosity, and dedicated care give to Mr. Schexnayder in his final weeks.
