Born in New Haven, CT on April 6, 1925, Estelle was the youngest of four sisters born to parents Morris and Pearl Calegman. She had jobs working in local movie theaters where she met the love of her life Samuel (Sam) Horwitz in 1943 in Hartford, CT. They married in 1945 and later moved to Brooklyn, NY where they raised a family. She was a homemaker while Sam continued in the movie business and they worked side-by-side running the Mermaid, Tuxedo and Tilyou Theaters in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn. In 1966, Sam entered local politics eventually serving five terms on the New York City Council. With son Mark and daughter Susan out on their own she went to work for the State of New York as a Health Benefits Administrator. She also served as Vice President of women’s charity work for Variety Club children’s charities. After a rewarding 15-year stint working for the state, she and Sam retired to Florida.
More than her work in the movies, politics, charities and healthcare, her greatest satisfaction came from sharing her time with countless friends and family. She could never get enough of attending parties, weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs, having phone conversations and personal visits with her beloved brood. All friends were friends for life, and Estelle never stopped making acquaintances into new friends or tracking down relatives from the past. The feeling was mutual with her ‘fans’ never forgetting her attentive, thoughtful, loving, and caring manner.
Estelle is survived by her son Mark and daughter-in-law Judy Horwitz of Abington, PA, daughter Susan Horwitz and son-in-law James Cooper of St. Augustine, FL, grandchildren Phoebe Cooper, Will Cooper, Jacob Horwitz and Nathan Horwitz and legions of adoring cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
