Mr. Sigmund Jacob Haber, 80 of Boca Raton, Florida passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, Lt. Col. Sigmund Jacob Haber, USA (Retired), devoted husband, loving father and beloved grandfather, passed away suddenly at the age of 80.
Lt. Col. Haber was born on October 6, 1938 in New York City, to Sam and Lena Haber. He grew up in Brooklyn, NY & was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School. He earned his B.S. in chemistry & geology from Hofstra University on Long Island, where he was a member of ROTC.
He proudly served in the United States Army from October 1959 to September 1981, when he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, from the 902d Military Intelligence Group, Ft. Meade, MD. During his time in the Army he was stationed in numerous areas of the country including New York, Kansas & Maryland, and overseas in Lubeck, Germany & Heidelberg, Germany. He was a decorated Vietnam veteran. As a Soviet specialist during the Cold War, he was in Berlin when the Berlin Wall was erected, in the Florida Keys during the Cuban Missile Crisis & worked at such prestigious organizations as the Central Intelligence Agency & the National Security Agency.
Lt. Col. Haber completed the Command & General Staff College, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. He received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster); Joint Service Commendation Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster); Meritorious Unit Commendation (2 Oak Leaf Clusters); National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; and the Expert Rifleman Badge.
His second career, upon retirement, was as a stock broker and later as a tax preparer.
He was passionate about his family, was especially proud of his daughter & loved being “Pop-Pop” to his grandchildren. He enjoyed life as a long-time resident of Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton, FL, with his beloved wife and their various dogs over the years (a Cockapoo, a Maltipoo & numerous Bichons Frises, some rescued & some not), traveling the country in their RV, taking cruises, and socializing with their many wonderful friends. He relished a good meal, especially at any of Florida’s many Jewish delis.
He was preceded in death by his father, Sam, and his mother, Lena. He is remembered in love and survived by his wife, Lisa; daughter Wendy, from his first marriage; and three grandchildren, Samantha, Jack and Jeremy. He was happily married to Lisa for 31 years. She was the love of his life, his soul mate & best friend. Sadly, he passed away on their 31st wedding anniversary.
A funeral service with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, VA on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. A memorial service & shiva will be held at Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton, FL on an earlier date (to be determined). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation at www.crohnscolitis.org. Lt. Col. Haber suffered from Crohn’s Disease for many years, so this cause was very near & dear to his heart.
