Don was the first of six children of Herbert and Margaret Gassen. He is preceded in death by his parents. Don attended St Patrick’s Grade School and Christian Brothers High School in St Joseph, Mo.
Don married Shirley Patton, also from St. Joseph. They met in grade school and became childhood sweethearts. They married shortly after high school. Their life was a true love story in every sense, having initially lived in St. Joseph, Mo, moving a couple times for work, and finally settling in Aurora Co.
They have three sons Derek (Mary Gizzie), Todd (Nancy Melissa) and Craig (Tanya LeJeune). Don was the proud grandfather of five ( Kaylee, Greg, Matthew, Jude and Amelia ). All the family currently live in the Denver, Co area.
Don also has 5 siblings – Cathy, Mary, Steve, Tina and Scott. He was a big brother in every way, always available for his brothers and sisters and embracing their spouses, his niece and nephew as his own family.
Don spent his career in the transportation industry as a trucking traffic manager for Navajo and for NW Transport, until retiring, due to Multiple Sclerosis (M.S.). He battled M.S. with great courage and grace, never complaining or letting his burden define his life. His strength while battling M.S. remains an inspiration to everyone who knew him especially his family.
Don passionately pursued his interests in Travel, Photography, Genealogy and helping his sons establish their lives. Family was paramount thoughout his life. His priorities were his sons and grand-children, his wife, his parents and siblings. He was a true family leader, characterized by his subtle compassionate strength for everyone in his family.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Easter Seals.
