Marion Hayes was born on June 4, 1931 to her parents Thomas Holroyd Hayes and Betsy Ellen of Burnley, Lancashire, England. She was the youngest of four children. Her oldest brother Fred, ( wife Barbara) Jack ( wife Elaine) and Alice (husband John Richards). She was raised in a small village named Lowerhouse.
She attended Rosegrove primary school, and Coal Clough secondary school, until the age of 14 years old. When she went to work as a seamstress at a sewing factory down Burnley.
It was a challenging time back then, Marion was bedridden at the age of 8, with rheumatoid arthritis for over a year. She had a bed set up off the parlor room on Holyoke Street facing her uncle's field. Her mother's sister would come check on her everyday from the farm. It was very painful to move, however she recovered and went back to school.
World War II was raging during her youth, something she didn't talk about unless she was prompted. Stories were told of the bomb sirens going off in the middle of the night, and how the family moved to safety under the staircase until another siren would return them to bed. It was the time of "blackout" curtains as towns didn't want the German aircrafts to know where the homes were to bomb. They walked to school with gas masks, and while at school, if the sirens went off, all the children would retreat to the bomb shelters with their teachers until it was safe to come back out, and then they would resume class.
I remember when we went to Dachau Concentration Camp while traveling in Germany, and in the museum, my mother started to cry and said, she recalled listening to the radio as a child, and they had talked about this camp, and now here she was decades later.
She did reflect on some happier times, that everyone in England always took a Holiday no matter how poor or rich you were, and that her family would go to the seaside at Blackpool. She had two special mates (friends) while growing up, and they went skating , swimming at the baths and later when she was older went to the pubs and then to Manchester to the clubs to meet with G.I.'s. It was there that she met her husband, Virgil Kreutzer at the Long Bar in Manchester. They dated for three years until his time was up in the military and he had to return to the United States. Marion followed him by ship in December of 1952, through Ellis Island. He met her at the New York Port of Entry Harbor. They then traveled by train west to Kansas to meet the new family. Marion converted from the Church of England to the Catholic religion in Victoria. On February 10, 1953 they were married in the St. Fidelis Church, better known as the Cathedral of the Plains. Shortly after they moved to Denver where they raised their two children, Dean Lee (deceased) and Beverly Ann (Seidel). There they resided for the remainder of their lives. Marion was a homemaker until the children went to school. She also worked part time jobs, again as a seamstress, and then for the Denver Public School District as a cook. She enjoyed working, swimming, dancing, knitting, crafting, traveling, seeing her family abroad, them coming to visit, and just spending time with the family and friends.
Marion is survived by her loving daughter Beverly Seidel (Doug), grandchildren and great grandchildren. A special "Thank you" to those that cared for her at the end. She will be missed by those who knew her.
