A Tribute to Sharon

My name is MaryEllen, also known as “Mena.”  I was only 11 years old when my mother passed away.  I was so frightened! I didn’t know what was going to happen to me.

My older siblings discussed many possibilities as to what to do with five teenagers at home.  The outcome was to keep Bobby, Linda, Dolly, Russell, and I, together.  In an effort to keep our family together, Richard, Sharon, and their two children, Louisa and Kathy, came to live with us.  

Essentially, I was raised by my sister-in-law, Sharon.  She was more to me than just a sister-in-law.  She was like a second mother to me.  

Sharon was an extraordinary woman.  She took very good care of me.  Sharon was nourishing, caring, giving, encouraging, elegant and spiritual. She believed in family unity, education, and achieving your goals. There was not anything Sharon wouldn’t do for you.

Today, and always, I want to pay tribute to my sister-in-law, Sharon, and will forever be grateful to her.  Thank you for being a big part of who I am today.

To the Chavez family, please acept my deepest sympathy.  I send my prayers to your family.  Sharon was a great boss and shared many career opportunities with me during my employment at the HUD Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity.  I'm honored I had the opportunity to learn from a great civil rights leader who worked hard and had a compassionate heart.  A fond memory is when she cooked a turkey for our office Thanksgiving lunch - the meat was too tender it fell off the bone.  She was a fabulous cook!  Sharon, your legacy lives on!!!!

Sharon, I met you many years ago, my good friend Mary Ellen, who is your sister in law, introduced us.  It was such a pleasure to see you on many family affairs.  You were a joy to be around! God bless you and your family! We will see you soon with our father above! God Bless you and yours!

I am so deeply saddened to learn of Sharon's passing and I would like to express my sincere sympathy to the family.  Sharon was highly respected by so many and regarded as a visionary leader by anyone who ever worked with her.  She was an amazingly caring person and the best co-worker and mentor anyone could have at HUD's Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity.  Please accept my heartfelt condolences at this difficult time.  Sharon was a remarkable woman and made a difference in so many lives, both at HUD, and in her private life.  Many will miss her.

My deepest condolences to Louise, Kathy & family at the loss of your precious mother Sharon.  My friend Sharon I do remember so much about you.  We go back a long way.  We shared so much happiness.  Butch & I stood up for your wedding and your were the most beautiful bride I have ever seen. I will miss you so much.  You were always such a special person.

Louisa, Kathy and the entire family, please accept my deepest sympathy and sorrow. I am so very sad to hear about Sharon's passing, though it is comforting to know that she is with the Lord. I have not been in touch with Sharon for years, but I have very fond memories of her. She was an extraordinarily compassionate woman and a great co-worker at HUD's Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity. She sincerely cared about every civil rights case she handled and no one worked more tirelessly than Sharon, even though she was not always in the best health.

I thank God that He blessed me with the opportunity to know and work with her for the years we shared together professionally. Sharon made great contributions to the advancement of fair housing and civil rights in the Rocky Mountain Region at HUD. She shunned the spot light, but never the heavy work. She was a great warrior for justice.  She was a blessing to all and helped countless people in doing her work.  She was also a great witness for our lord and savior Jesus Christ. She lived a good life and did good works. May God's grace and mercy be with Louisa, Kathy, and the entire family as you mourn the loss of your wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt and person - God bless all of you!!!

My heart breaks for Kathy & Lousie, it has been years. Your mama was a Wonderful lady, I have tons of memories as I too was Blessed by growing up in your house. Saw your mom a few years back at the courthouse in Pueblo we sat and talked for an hour or so, about old times. I have thought about my Santoya family for years always with a smile on my face, knew one day I would find you all again but I didn't want it to be like this. Tons of love & prayers ladies for you and your families.

Aunt Sharon,
I still cannot believe you have gone to be with the Lord already.  It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating a birthday, Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, or a Bronco game, or some other event at your house in Arvada as you were always the best hostess and best cook.  Remember the time James won our favorite dog Shiloh in that poker game, or the endless games of foosball we played in the basement?  How about the time James, my dad and I painted your house?  I am sure you will never forget! Thanks again for allowing me to do all those chores too for my summer allowances.  Your passing is yet another reminder that only the Lord knows when it’s your time to go and that in the meantime we need to life live to the fullest righteously.  We need to be thankful for all our loved ones and all our blessings and take the time to express this in our actions. As mom has been saying as of late we need to live, laugh, and love.  You will be missed dearly and I am so sad I did not get to tell you before your departure how much I love and appreciate you and all you did for me and my loved ones during your time on this earth.  Well I do and I know you know it.  I will take with me your example of unconditional love, and love for your family among other things, and I know you will be with us always in spirit.  My prayers are with you and your loved ones you left behind.
