Velma Lou McCants was born to Tom and Ezra Lemmings in Little, Oklahoma, on July 13, 1926. She was the youngest of eight children, all of whom preceded her in death. She attended school in Strothers, OK. In early 1946, Velma met Henry M. McCants (Marcie) while working in a movie theater. They married six weeks later. Marcie was in the service so they moved often to destinations including Texas, France, Oklahoma and Puerto Rico. While in Europe they traveled to Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Germany.
In their early years, Velma was a stay at home mom. She was kept busy with her children but found time to care for ailing relatives, elderly neighbors providing three meals a day, everyday. She was the world's best pie maker. In the words of a great grandson "we need to get the word out." Over her lifetime, she baked thousands of pies for family, neighbors, and friends.
When her beloved Marcie passed away in 1975, Velma moved the family back to Denver where she worked in retail then the mortgage industry. For the last 19 years of her career, she was nanny to Michael, Matthew, and Marissa Marino. She loved them as her own.
Velma passed away on February 13, in the arms of her children. She is survived by: Carlotta (Jim, deceased), Linda (Brad), Steve, Debbie (Bob) and Marcella (Clif). In addition to her children, she is survived by grandchildren: Michael, Steven, Jennifer, Kaytie, Bradley and Brian. At present she has 13 great grandchildren.
Velma (mom, grandma, great grandma) will be terribly missed by her family, many friends, and neighbors. To the end, she gave a smile, a handshake, a kind word to all those who were lucky enough to cross her path.
