Dear Louanna,

You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.  Fred will be remembered at our next Remembrance Mass, on September 15 in Rosary Chapel.

My prayers are with you in your time of grief. I will always remember Mr.Steinken as a man who always had a kind word and smile every time I was with him. God bless.

I wanted to share a Grandpa memory at the funeral luncheon, but I was tearing up listening to everyone talk, so I knew I wouldn't be able to get a story out. Here is what I would have said:

Hi, I'm Nina, Nancy's daughter and the oldest granddaughter. This puts me in a special position because I was able to see Grandpa enjoy all of my younger cousins. I remember him throwing them up in the air and singing a wordless song that was always the same. I remember every time someone brought him a drawing or told him a story, he would always respond with surprised excitement, "Well, hot dog!"

In their backyard, Grandma and Grandpa had a tire swing hanging from a tree by their shed. We loved having Grandpa push us on the swing because he could get us higher than anyone else; high enough to see the top of the shed! One time when he was pushing me, the rope snapped and I flew off. I had the wind knocked out of me but was completely fine, except that I bit my tongue. While Grandma went to get me an orange-flavored Popsicle, Grandpa stayed with me to make sure I was okay. I loved getting that special attention from him. I found out today that some of my cousins were mad at me for breaking the swing. 

Years later when I had a baby, Grandpa was already struggling with his health. He had days where he did not respond to much, but each time I brought Penelope to hockey and placed her in front of him, he stared at her and smiled just enough for us to know how happy he was to see his own great-grandchildren.

I will always remember his smile and his big laugh. I will constantly miss him, and each time we gather as a family, I will be forever grateful that he and Grandma did such an amazing job in making sure I was always surrounded by loving family. We are truly blessed to have known such an important man.

My thoughts and prayers are with Aunt Lou and my cousins who have lost their Dad. I will always remember Uncle Fred as an easy going guy who like to laugh. I will miss him.
