Herbert C. Nicolai

Herbert (Herb) Charles Nicolai, 96, passed away peacefully at Melody Living, Lake in the Hills, IL on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. He was surrounded by his three children, Nancy Messman, Rick Nicolai, and Lori Barger. Herb is survived by his three children and their spouses, five grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. In addition, he has four nieces and a nephew.

Herb was the 5th child of Edward and Mary Nicolai in Chicago, IL. His siblings included Margaret, Helen, Edna, and Edward. Herb was married to Betty Ann Nicolai (Jones) for 50 years. They loved to travel, cook new and favorite recipes, attend plays and concerts, and get together with friends. Herb could not attend a family function without bringing his famous apple pie! Betty passed away in 2001. Herb enjoyed a lengthy career of about 50 years in the Tool & Die industry; designing and making steel molds, appreciating the precision involved in this work.

Herb had an infectious positive attitude; he loved being with family and friends, and was beloved by all who knew him. His joy was unbounded and he always carried a warm, glowing smile. Expressing gratitude for friendships and for the good he received was a hallmark of his appreciation and caring nature.

Herb was a member of the Logan Square drum and bugle corps during and after high school and he performed at many national events and competitions playing the snare drum. He was also an active member of the Arlingtones Barbershop Chorus for 40+ years as a lead vocalist. Many of his dearest, longtime friends were part of the Arlingtones and he looked upon them as family.

Herb loved animals - especially dogs and had a part-time dog-sitting business with Betty for many years. He continued to provide a home-away-from-home for furry longtime customers even after Betty passed, always enjoying their company.

A memorial service will be held in June at Memorial Gardens in Arlington Heights for friends and family.
