Some 47 years ago, I asked a silly question on Sudan philately in an Egyptian Studies monthly newsletter. I was 15 years old, long on hair and short on brains. To my surprise, a true gentleman and scholar named Peter A. S. Smith answered my query at length in a letter I still cherish. We corresponded about Sudan postal history during my teen years. I was amazed that anyone as important as Professor Smith could spend time and energy on a teenager -- with almost no money and who lived in Amarillo, Texas. I never forgot his unfailing kindness to me. Now I am a full Professor myself. I was honored to be a high bidder on some of the most interesting Sudan lots in Dr. Smith's Corinphila Auction of 2015. I treasure the memory of this erudite man, a role model for us all. He gave me encouragement and he enriched my youth. -- Dr. John Miller Morris, Austin, Texas.

I met Peter over 40 years ago when he was frequently visiting his mother in Marin County, California. We met at a number of stamp shows from Interphil in 1976 to London in 2010 talking about postal stationery (mostly Egypt of course). He was a fountain of information and always the gentleman. He will be missed by many.

I have met Peter a number of times in New York and London at stamp events and always came away with some new piece of useful information.  He was a fine chap and will be missed.

It was a pleasure and an inspiration to have worked with him.

So sad to hear that Peter has left us. A true giant in the world of Egyptian philately, but always willing to share his encyclopaedic knowledge. As a specialist, as a researcher, as a man of generous spirit, he will be missed enormously.

Peter's life was a blessing to many.  We will miss him.

He was an inspiration to me with his endless knowledge, many fascinating stories and motivation to keep active despite his medical issues.
