Alice always worked. She started with Hostess potato chip company in Port Williams, then moved to Digby, where she was a telephone operator and supervisor for Maritime Tel & Tel. She later was employed by Digby Pines, Mountain Gap Inn, then CFB Cornwallis as a telephone operator, retiring in 1994. After retirement, Mom volunteered at Digby General Hospital for several years.
Mom’s passion was in the work she did with her Church, Smith’s Cove United Baptist Church, where she held various positions including Sunday School teacher, superintendent of the Sunday School, she was active in Bible study for many years and was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and Church deacon.
Mom wore many hats — daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, telephone operator, baker and a believer in God. Mom’s faith never wavered through good times and difficult times. Her mantra was “Just pray on it.”
Mom accepted the challenges she was given with a graceful attitude. She never said “why me.” Mom was known in her family and community as a lover of food and a great baker. She was known everywhere for her famous carrot cakes — bidding wars erupted when Mom would make her famous carrot cakes.
If her hands could tell us how many pies, rolls, date squares, molasses cookies, or carrot cakes she made, it would be an impressive number. Mom could often be heard asking someone if they were hungry even before they took their coats off when coming into her house.
After several decades out of school, Mom went back, completed her studies, and passed her GED — something she was very proud of.
Mom and Dad believed the only way to get something in life was to work hard for it, and they not only said this but lived it by example.
Mom loved having a dog for companionship later in life — Sparky, Amy, Nelson and Emma were very special to her.
No more pain, Momma — you’ve earned your wings and are with your Lord. I know you’ll be watching over us from heaven above.
See you later, alligator… in a while, crocodile.
