It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Captain Chesterton (Chet) Denton, of Digby, formerly of Little River, on October 23, 2022 at the age of 78. Born in Digby, he was the son of the late Rodney Denton and Muriel Denton (Harris).
Chet was an avid fisherman all of his life and he thoroughly enjoyed fishing alongside his boys. At the age of 18, Chet started his fishing career as the captain of a lobster boat. Chet moved on from lobstering and later, built and fished herring weirs with his sons and sons in law. Chet also captained several fish draggers and eventually returned to lobster fishing where he retired from after 56 years in the fishing industry. The boys truly enjoyed their time fishing with Chet, but his ways of teaching and working with them were sometimes trying.
In his retirement, his great passions where mackerel fishing with friends and family, willing to take anyone who was prepared to be there at 5AM.
Chet enjoyed sharing his knowledge of fishing with friends and anyone willing to listen. He was always known for having a bag of cat food in his truck to feed any stray cats. He will be remembered for driving his white truck down Digby Neck to the River every day.
Some of his favorite times were Christmas gatherings, getting deer carrots for all the family, camping with friends and family where there were many drinks and laughs had around the campfire. Even though he had a tough exterior, he had a kind and generous heart of gold.
Chet had many special people in his life, among a few were Dave Grantley (Mavis) who was his guardian angel. As well as, Richard and Cherrie who took over care of his cat Blackie and the homestead in Little River. He enjoyed his special time with his brother in law Darren and their many trips to KFC and Tim’s.
Chet leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Anna Denton (Farstad); son, Joey (Gloria) Denton of Little River; daughter, Annette (Keith) Comeau of Brighton; son, Stacey (Cheryl) Denton of Little River, and daughter Teena (Trent) Bohaker of Digby. Grand children, Justin (Kim) Harnish, Alyssa (Mark) Comeau, Wyatt and Garrett Bohaker. Great grandchildren, Addison, Sophia, Maverick, Ava, Xavier, Alexis and Charlee. Sister, Brenda Lohnes; brothers, Austin (Mickey) Denton, Shawn (Diana) Denton, sister, Debbie Denton and brother, Jonathan Denton. Special Aunt, Shirley (Eric) Mayhew and sister in law, Sandra (Eric) Outhouse whom he loved to torment. Besides his parents, Chet was predeceased by grandson, Tyson Harnish, brother in law, George Lohnes and special brother in law Darren Farstad.
Special thanks to Aaron who provided much guidance and support during the latter times of his life, staff at Digby General Hospital (Erich and Stacey) who went above and beyond with the care and compassion they offered and Dr. Endie of the VG.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Society for the Friends of Ferals
or the DRHS Mariners High School Hockey Team.
