With heavy hearts that the family announce the passing of Ernest “Ernie” Simms. He left us on March 26 at Kings Regional Rehabilitation Center, MacArthur Unit. Born in Digby Nova Scotia on October 29, 1954. He was the son of Vernon and Guida (Cromwell) Simms.
Ernie is survived by his siblings Vernon Simms (Valarie), Perry Simms (Glynis), Maylene Ramore, Martina McGrath (Allan). As well as many nieces and nephews.
Aside from his parents Ernie is predeceased by brothers Karlis Simms and Aldean Simms.
Ernie was a big Toronto Maple Leafs fan. He loved to colour and everyone always made sure he had a supply of colouring books. Ernie’s favorite food was KFC. Martina and Perry would not dare to show up without his KFC. Ernie enjoyed the visits and outings with his family very much. In earlier years Ernie loved to listen to music and in earlier years you would always see him sitting at the kitchen table singing away. Ernie would attend any denominations of churches but Jehovah Witnesses is where he found what he was looking for. When he was unable to attend the members would visit him, phone or video chat. Ernie was known for wearing his police hat and his sheriff’s uniform, which included pants with a yellow stripe and a jacket with the sheriff badge. He gained the nickname “Sheriff”.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Dixon and all the staff at MacArthur Unit where everyone was so amazing with Ernie and took such good care for him. Especially Sandra (Ernie called her Edie) who had such a special bond with Ernie. She was always able to get a big hug from Ernie. She was more than a caregiver, she was Ernie’s friend.
A funeral service will take place on Thursday, April 10 at 1:00 p.m., from Jaynes Funeral Home in Digby. Interment to follow at Maplewood Cemetery for the family.
