Matthew Lorne Thurber 21 years old. Born Oct 2, 1999 - July 18, 2021. Born to Laurie Ann & Clifton There are no words to describe the loss of our son, grandson, brother, uncle. Matthew was the most caring, loving, giving soul and touched so many lives. A hero in his own right, he saved the life of a man he did not know, stepping up while others watched. Matthew spent many summers at J.C.P., first as a camper, then CIT and as a counsellor, where he enjoyed every minute of the time he spent with his campers. He also enjoyed 4H, where he took his puppy Lexi for obedience training, and competed. Matthew was very athletic growing up, playing baseball pitching with Digby Area Minor Baseball League, with his fellow players, his amazing coaches and especially with his lifelong sidekick, best friend and brother Dawson as his catcher. Besides baseball, he played in a variety of sports, including basketball that he loved, track and field acquiring provincials for his famous discus & shotput throws and badminton during the winter months.
After graduating high school in 2018, Matthew attend the welding course at NSCC Burridge campus for a year, and then transferred to NSCC Akerley campus for his second year. Although he was unable to finish because of an injury, he had intended to return when in person classes resumed. Until then, he started lobster fishing and then got the bug and had decided to continue. During summers he whale watched beside his mom as a guide for Petit Passage Whale Watch. He was very good at what he did. His huge personality was a hit with his passengers, co-workers and he made us all very proud in everything he did and accomplished. Matthew was known as his little brother’s biggest defender, confidant and we are sure he will continue to be. He was a best friend to many, who we are sure will miss him. He touched many lives with his amazing personality and big smile. He was the most caring, loving, kindhearted individual who would do anything for anyone.
He will be profoundly missed by his mother Laurie & dad Clifton “Tony”; best friend & brother Dawson; brothers, Bryan (Lindsey) of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Thor (Cecilia) of Freeport and Bridgetown, Trent (Sabrina) of Waterford, Tony (Gena) of Halifax; sister, Tess (Romeyn) of New Ross and Iqaluit; grandfather, Clifton Thurber Sr. of Freeport; grandmother, Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Trask of Hampton, NB; his puppies Lexi and Bailee, uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews who will miss him immensely.
