Lehrer -- Miriam “Mimi” Penny (nee Grabel), 80, of Valley Stream, passed away on April 1st following a prolonged, valiant struggle with Alzheimer's dementia. The insidious illness could not extinguish Miriam's gentle, loving spirit and bright smile. Her family is indebted to the dedicated home health aides who allowed Miriam to live with dignity in her final years. This loyal team includes constant companions Michelle and Alicia, along with Whitney, Denise, Samar, Dollie, Simone, Carol, and others.
Miriam was born March 22, 1945 to Lester and Sylvia Grabel in Brooklyn. The family, including sisters Lillian, Barbara, and Maury soon moved to Woodmere on Long Island where Miriam graduated from Lawrence High School in 1962. She married Jeffrey H. Lehrer on September 11, 1966 and is survived by her husband of more than 58 years, two sons, Alan and Jonathan, her daughter-in-law, Meryl, and two granddaughters, Joslyn and Robyn.
Miriam earned an associate's degree later in life from Nassau Community College and served the public for many years as a supervisor at the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library and the Freeport Memorial Library. Miriam relished time with her family and traveling to new places. She will be remembered for her kindness, selflessness, and sensitivity to others. Also, for her fine matzo balls and noodle pudding! Mimi will be missed dearly by those who loved her.
