Dr. Sheldon Zaslow, 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 29, 2018 at Excel at Woodbury Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He is survived by his son, Barry Zaslow; son Garry Zaslow and wife Stephanie; daughter Wendy Goldberg, and grandchildren Seth and Ari Goldberg; as well as many close family and friends.
Born on November 18, 1926, to Barnett and Frieda Zaslofsky, Sheldon was raised in the Bronx, NY. He lived all his life in the New York City area, finally settling on Long Island, where he raised his family in North Babylon before moving to Bay Shore.
After graduating from Stuyvesant High School in 1944, Sheldon went on to study at CCNY and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He then pursued a degree in dentistry at NYU Dental School. In 1951, he married Sylvia Fassberg, loving wife and mother of his three children, who passed away at the age of 63 in 1989.
Dr. Zaslow served with the Army during the Korean War as a 1st Lieutenant in the Dental Corp., and was stationed in Nuremburg, Germany. Upon his discharge from the Army, he began practicing dentistry in New York. By the early 1960’s, Dr. Zaslow had established a dental office in North Babylon, where he continued to work as a sole practitioner for the next 40-plus years.
Dr. Zaslow had a passion for animals and was a docent at the Bronx Zoo for more than two decades. Upon his retirement, he travelled the world with his companion of more than 20 years, Roberta Casper. An avid beachgoer, he served as a volunteer at the Fire Island Lighthouse and was an ardent supporter of its preservation. He also spent many years as a volunteer for the New York Blood Centers, offering a friendly face and helping hand to patrons who had just donated their blood or plasma.
Funeral services will take place at the I.J. Morris Funeral Home on February 2, 2018, commencing at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made to the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society.
